FAQs
ABOUT AROMATHERAPY
What is the difference between an essential oil and a fragrance oil?
An essential oil is a concentrated pure plant extract. Most essential oils are obtained from freshly harvested plant material by a steam distillation or cold pressing process. Essential oils are used in aromatherapy, therapeutics, flavourings and fine perfumery. Each essential oil has a complex range of constituents and have many beneficial properties.
A fragrance oil is a synthetic or ‘created’ chemical scent. It is not natural and is a poor imitation of the real thing. It has no therapeutic qualities. Fragrance oils can be quite intense and lingering and may cause headaches and skin reactions.
How do I know if the essential oil I'm buying is pure?
It is important to purchase your oils from a reputable supplier. Quality oils will state 100% pure and natural with a botanical name, a batch number and a ‘use by’ date on the label. Price is also a good indication of quality; if it is too cheap, it could be diluted or adulterated. If it is too expensive compared with leading retail brands you may be paying too much. It is important to read the labels carefully and ensure the label states the full ingredient listing.
How does Aromatherapy work?
By Absorption
Diluted in a carrier oil or fragrance-free base and applied to the skin, essential oils penetrate into the skin and travel through the lymph system and bloodstream. Within 20 or so minutes after application, essential oils are present in the bloodstream, and users will begin to experience the benefits.
By Inhalation
Inhaled molecules of essential oils reach the lungs from where they eventually enter the bloodstream where, similar to absorption, their benefits can be experienced.
The tiny molecules also reach the olfactory bulb where neurotransmitters identify the constituents of the oils and messages are sent accordingly to the limbic system in the brain which is involved in emotions, memory and state of mind.
Why is Aromatherapy so effective?
Being 100% pure and natural, essential oils are concentrated botanical energies carrying the life force of each plant. Each oil has its own chemical constituents with beneficial properties stimulating the body’s own wellness mechanisms.
How do I use essential oils and what amounts should I use?
Massage: Wonderful way to enjoy the relaxation and therapeutic value of essential oils. Great for children too. Remember to always dilute essential oils in a fragrance free cold pressed carrier oil such as almond oil, jojoba or other natural plant oils.
Adults: To easily remember how much essential oil to use, measure out the carrier oil and divide the amount by half to get the total amount of essential oil(s) DROPS for a 2.5% dilution.
E.g., 10 (ml of carrier oil) divided by 2 = 5 (drops of essential oil)
Children: Use 1/2 of the adult dose or 2 drops in 10ml carrier oil. For infants older than 1 year, use 1 drop in 10ml carrier oil.
Elderly: Use 1/2 of the adult dose.
Oil Diffusers: Scent your environment naturally. There are many different types of diffusers that can be used. We recommend ultra-sonic diffusers. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. For ceramic diffusers that use tea lite candles, place on a heat proof mat, and keep out of reach of children and pets. Never leave candle lit burners unattended.
Inhalation: Add 1-2 drops onto tissue or handkerchief. Hold a few inches from nose and inhale as required.
Steam Inhalation: Add 3-4 drops essential oil to bowl of hot water. Cover head with towel, close eyes and inhale vapours. Not recommended for asthmatics.
Bath: Fill bath with warm water (too hot and the oils will evaporate). Blend 4-6 drops essential oil(s) with 1 tablespoon of milk and shake well, add to bath and agitate water to disperse oils before relaxing in the bath. Breathe deeply and enjoy the aromatic benefits of the oils.
Spritzer/Room Spray: Create a refreshing face, body or environment fine mist spray. In a 100ml amber glass bottle with fine mist spray, add 20-25 drops essential oil(s). Shake well to disperse oils, close eyes and spray. A Lavender Spritz is an excellent way to stay refreshed on a long plane journey. Remember that oils and water don’t mix, so you need to shake the bottle each time you spritz.
Essential oils and safety
Essential oils are a wonderful way to create a healthy scented home and work environment or for personal care. However, they are concentrated and potent plant extracts and should be used with care. Please observe the following usage and safety guidelines:
Adults: Generally 6-8 drops in 10ml carrier oil, lotion base or bath.
Children: 2 drops in every 10ml unscented carrier base or bath water.
Infants 6 months up to age 2: 1 drop in every 10ml unscented carrier oil. Only some oils are safe for babies. We recommend chamomile roman, lavender or mandarin. If there is any negative reaction discontinue use. Do not use strong oils on babies as they could cause sensitisation or irritation.
Pregnancy: Skin application after first trimester, 2-3 drops in 10ml carrier oil, lotion base or bath. Use gentle oils like bergamot, chamomile roman, lavender, lemon, or orange. For vaporisation only use 3 drops every few hours in your selected vaporiser.
DO
- Store your oils safely away from children and pets.
- Store your oils in an amber bottle with dripulator and cap in a cool dark environment, away from direct heat and sunlight.
- Take care with allergies or sensitive skin. Do a patch test on a spot of skin and observe any irritation. If irritation occurs, do not use the essential oil.
- Be cautious during pregnancy. We recommend that the use of essential oils be minimised. Some oils should not be used at all. Consult an aromatherapist for further information.
DO NOT
- Take essential oils internally. Essential oils are very concentrated and some oils such as eucalyptus can be toxic if ingested.
- If ingested, do not induce vomiting. Drink milk and seek medical advice.
- Do not apply essential oils directly onto the skin. It is recommended to dilute essential oils in cold pressed carrier oils, a fragrance-free lotion or balm base.
- Citrus oils may cause skin to become sensitive to the sun – do not apply these essential oils to the skin prior to sun exposure. Allow at least 4 hours before exposing skin to sunlight.
- Do not use oils which do not agree with you.
What do I do if my skin has a reaction to an essential oil?
Dilute the area with plenty of fragrance free carrier oil. Water will not dilute essential oils. If you are concerned, seek advice from a health care practitioner.
How long can I use Natural Elements Aromatherapy products last after I have opened them?
We recommend to use our products at their freshest for best results. Each of our products will have a ‘use by’ date on the label. However, note for essential oils, many oils will be fine to use after the use by date, some oils improve with age such as patchouli but we are required to give a limited use by date on our labels. If you are not sure for use on the skin you can always diffuse these oils as long as the scent is still nice.
How do I best store my products?
We generally recommend keeping your products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Some products like carrier oils will last longer if stored in the fridge. For essential oils always store them in dark bottles, capped away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
ABOUT PACKAGING
Why do we use dark glass bottles for essential oils?
So much more than pretty packaging, dark amber bottles are the choice material, especially for essential oils, massage and carrier oils. Dark coloured bottles help keep your product stable by blocking out sunlight and UV rays.
Is Natural Elements Aromatherapy packaging recyclable?
We are committed in doing our part for the environment. That is why our bottles and packaging is reusable and recyclable.
What is the number (B: #######) on my product?
This number is the batch number. This indicates the unique production batch of the product for full product traceability. Each production batch is given a new batch number.
What does the ‘use by’ date on my product mean?
The ‘use by’ date gives an indication when the product should be used. Some essential oils can still be used after a ‘use by’ date has passed depending on the storage and longevity of the essential oil. For body and facial products, it is recommended to use the product according to its ‘use by’ date.
